Today, we come together to celebrate the International Day of Cooperatives under the theme "Cooperatives Build a Better Future for All." This day is a special occasion to acknowledge and appreciate the significant role that cooperatives have played, and continue to play, in building a better future for all.
As we celebrate this day, we recognize the remarkable contributions that cooperatives have made to our continent's growth. Cooperatives have consistently shown their dedication to inclusive and sustainable growth, upholding values and principles that are crucial for building a future that is fair, just, and resilient.
The cooperative movement in Africa has a rich history of empowering communities, fostering inclusive economic growth, and promoting social cohesion. As we look towards the future, the cooperative movement is more vital than ever in driving sustainable development and achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) by 2030.
From agriculture to finance, from housing to healthcare, African cooperatives have been at the forefront of promoting sustainability. They have uplifted communities, provided essential services, and created opportunities for all, especially the marginalized and underserved. By committing to sustainable practices, we ensure that we not only cater to the needs of the present but also safeguard the future for generations to come.
As we build momentum towards the 2025 International Year of Cooperatives, declared by the United Nations, let us continue to champion cooperatives as key players in creating a better world. Let us use this day to uphold our cooperative identity, to inspire others with our achievements, and to reaffirm our commitment to building a better future for all. Let us amplify our efforts to achieve the SDGs by 2030, demonstrating that cooperatives are not just an alternative business model, but a driving force for sustainable development.
